What your IP address actually reveals

Your IP address identifies your internet provider and points to a rough region — not to you personally. Everyone behind your home router usually shares the same public IP, and on many mobile and broadband networks it's shared even more widely through carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), where hundreds of unrelated customers can appear to come from one address at the same time. It's visible to every site and server you connect to, because that's how a reply finds its way back to your device — there's no way to browse the web without exposing it. None of that makes it a personal identifier: on its own, an IP address can't name you, find your street address, or prove who was using a device at a given moment.

IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4 is the original addressing scheme from the early internet — a 32-bit number space that ran out of free addresses years ago. IPv6 is its much larger replacement, designed so every device could have its own globally routable address without the workarounds IPv4 now depends on. Plenty of connections today have both: your device picks whichever protocol a given site supports, so the two rows above can show different addresses for the same connection at the same time.

An empty IPv6 row is completely normal. Many home and mobile networks are still IPv4-only, and a browser genuinely cannot tell "this network has no IPv6" apart from "the IPv6 probe was blocked" — both look identical from where the page runs. Rather than guess which one happened, the card above states both possibilities plainly whenever a probe comes back empty.

How to change or hide your IP

If your provider assigns addresses dynamically, restarting your router is often enough to pick up a new one — though some ISPs hand back the same address, and business connections are frequently static by design. To mask your address from the sites you visit rather than just changing it, use a VPN or a proxy: both substitute their own IP for yours, so sites see the VPN or proxy provider instead of your connection.

One honest caveat worth stating plainly: changing your DNS resolver does not change your IP address. DNS only controls who translates domain names into addresses for you — it has no effect on the address your connection presents to the sites and servers you reach. It is not GPS, it does not come from your device, and it cannot identify your street address.

Can someone find me from my IP address?
